Still looking for my first TVR. Checked one out yesterday, seemed good value but in need of some TLC. Car had only done 30K since '97 but I was told, with some pride, that it had a new cylinder head gasket a few years ago. Surely this can't be a good sign....

Not really a bad sign. Gaskets can fail prematurely. I'd look at the paperwork, history of the car and look to see if it's been cared for. If it needs a lot of tlc then maybe it's been neglected.

If the head gasket has been done... they do fail and it is not a TVR thing... then the top half of the engine is removed which means that it can be chceked for any premature wear e.g Cam. Most good guys take this opportunity to give the engine a good going over because the main costs involved strip down have been paid for.
