Import numberplates

Does anybody know why the number plates on Jap imports are square?
Is it a regulation to identify them or just a 'cool' thing to do?

its because japanese plates are square, so the brackets on the bumper are square.

people keep them on because they look cool, and are legal.

'Square' plates are used (usually two line, but can be single line if you get 1s or a 6-figure number), along with motorcycle sized characters, if your non type approved car doesnt have sufficient space to fit a conventionally sized plate
