I had one for six years, it was superb and I would still have one if I did not need more boot space for the dogs.
Front suspension bushes wear out quite fast, door hinges can get a bit stiff and make creaking noises if they never get lubed, the s
te Bosch airflow meters go wrong and the exhaust valve in the diesels can stick, that is it as far as my experience goes.Go for the diesel, it is faster as well as being more economical.
We've had a diesel one for 4 years now with no real issues - a few electrical gremlins in the form of lying dash warning lights, but nothing that actually stops it working!
The three abreast seating position is fantastic and genuinely usable for three adults (as opposed to the Honda FR-V which is a bit tight).
We'll have to swap it soon due to the arrival of child number three and the need to cart them and the in-laws around fairly regularly. We will definitely miss its usable practicality though.

I ran a JTD ELX back in 2003/4(ish) for 18 months. Literally the best car in it's class. Sure the looks are not to everyones taste, but who gives a crap when it was really the only MPV in its class which could actually do the job it was designed to do?
They are remarkably good to drive, plenty of glass so visibility is good aswell as not making you feel you're hemmed in, plus the a wide track and 4-square footprint make them feel pretty stable on the road.
I had no issues with mine in that time and put around 30k miles on it, the only thing being a recall for the front road springs which was done free of charge by Fiat.
I averaged somewhere in the region of 45mpg in a lot of mixed driving.
The only real downside is it's ability to turn into a van. It's like winning the lottery, people you never knew you knew come out of the woodwork 'needing something taking to the tip'...
Great cars and utter bargains.
