As the title says really! I was bought a special edition bottle of beer as a Millenium gift and have been thinking about drinking it on New years eve! I was wondering if it has likely to have gone off or will it be OK! I dont want to drink it if its going to be rubbish as I might as well keep it as a keep stake. Anyone got any ideas?

If it's still in the sealed bottle and has been kept properly I'd guess it should be ok, but I'm no expert.

After 8 years, unless you are lucky and it's stored correctly I reckon it will be quicker just to chuck it down the loo...

Bottle conditioned ales have long lives as they are live when bottled so preserve themselves, pasteurised beers can go off as they are dead.

Beer in cans does go off it seems.

I had to chuck a few away earlier this week - tasted like piss (I imagine)

..... same day I ate a tin of water chestnuts that apparently went off in 2006.

I've had (and still got some) canned beer that has a use by date some time in 2006. It still tastes perfectly good and no different to when I opened some cans back in 2005/2006.

It was Fosters so I guess it is supposed to taste like piss

Just told the wife that the water chestnuts were 3/12 years out of date - she's not impressed hehe

I have a bottle of Carlsberg 68, though it does have a few 'cloudy bits' floating round in it now it's reached nearly 42 years of age... Ah well, I'm the same age but hopefully without the cloudy bits floating deep inside me...though I can't be sure!

That's probably starting to get on a bit, even for Chimay! They reckon it's supposed to last 20-25 years.
