On the basis that the TVR Griffith is the best car at ANY time, then it must have been the best car to go from Idle, to Thornton and back to Bradford for ma curry this evening, and on home to Burley-in-Wharfedale. I don't usually do this in snow, on icy roads etc etc ... I was wondering if a 4x4 could have been more suitable???

No.

(the 4x4 would not have been more suitable).

Saw a Rangie stuffed into a hedge on the Wolds this afty.

Some people forget that 2 tons of 4 x 4 will still slide quite nicely on ice if going too fast because they think they're invincible. rolleyes

G,
2 tons of 4 x 4 will slide quite nicely on ice irrespective of how vincible you think you are wink

My 2 tons worth was quite happy to slide about this morning at -15 degress on fresh snow. It seemed quite reluctant to take any notice of driver input.. laugh

You want to get something good and reliable, like a TVR or a Range Rover.

In these conditions I'd prefer an old Moggy thou'.

Skinny wheels, good ground clearance, light weight, low power and torque... but ideally with the optional heater.

Happy days. biggrin

Had my old 14" 185 tyres on my roadster last time we had snow, cheap blocky treads too. Worked surprisingly well. Also with a rwd car you can use the handbrake to simulate as an additional diff lock. I couldy get my audi 80 out the street this morning but I am about in the Mazda. It's coming back down the hill later that's worrying me!

My MINI Cooper on 175/65 tyres is actually quite brilliant in the snow - as were the old Saabs but with those you were always reluctant to bring the properly nice one out because of their tendency to dissolve in salty, watery conditions... hehe

Yes, I was going to mention the 'proper' Mini too...superb in snow and ice, and you can always push them out by yourself if you do happen to get stuck. smile

Yeah, only this is not a proper one - just a BMW half series on the narrow standard 15" wheels and tyres (which incidentally make for the best handling and ride)...

I was in the TVR on Thursday because a Parisian collegue who (honestly) is a raving TVR maniac and was in the UK, I had promised him a whizz. The weather wasnt THAT bad when I went in to the office in the morning, but by 4ish a good white covering. OKAY, so a lot of torque was a bit embarassing at times, but we got around when others were stuck (nutty froggy was happy). After a curry, back to Burley-in-Wharfedale late evening during a blizzard.
I am waiting delivery of an A4 Avant for "normal use" right now (ordered Nov, March delivery, and German car factories are laying people off???) ... anyway, my last lease car was a Volvo V50 D5; without doubt the WORST car on snow I have had. A bit of wheel slip and the (non-switch-off)traction control kicked in, I would sit on a slight incline foot down, engine at idle cos it decided that was the best thing! Are Volvos REALLY designed in Sweden? Seriously, there were times when the Volvo would be a no-go yet I would bet that the Griffith would storm up the hill!

Was so tempted to take the Caterhams out but resisted!

Can confirm that X5 drifts quite nicely and that an R32 MkiV is actually quite good in the snow smile
