Good morning all.

Has anyone performed the following mod to a 3.2 M3 Evo Coupe:

Bilstien B6 Shocks & H&R Sport Springs.

As ive recently done the upgrade and had no end of issues, First car felt like it was a pogo stick, then had to cut the front shock bumpstops down which improved thaings, but then the rear was bouncy, then I threw away the oem rear bumpstops and started to us the bilstien ones, but with the slight lowering of the h&r springs there was no travel in the rear shocks, so I had to cut them slightly, but still not convinced the cars right.

Its stiffer than oem, looks to have droipped the right amount, but there is still an undulation and a kind of hoppyness (if thats even a word) when you driving along, and I dont knwo if thats caused by the stiffness, or the bumpstops are still interferring, going slightyl mad now ;0(

Wondered:
1. Has anyone else done this upgrade
2. Has anyone else had issues with b6 bilstien shocks
3. Has anyone else had issues with H&R Sports Springs

I did a lot of reseach before spending out on this upgrade and this combo seemed commonly good?

cheers in advance.

Not 100% on this one, but I thought that the B6's were more suited to use with stock springs, and the B8's designed to run with lowering springs.

Have a look at the Bilstein site.

Correct, but you are supposed to be able to drop upto 30MM on them with no modification of the bumpstops, and Bistien down stock b8 damper for the m3 on thier product list.

(the shocks didnt run right with oem btw either )

Various compays offer B6 shocks with H&R OE, Sport and Race options so seems a common thing.

On their product finder they only list B6 ;0(

http://www1.carparts-cat.com/webkat.asp?SID=000811...

Note form sales site selling them

"B6 - Ideal upgrade for standard dampers, all the benefits of B8, designed to work with standard ride height and up to 30mm lowering"

Well, the clue may well be the lack of rear travel. May be try the B6's with your OE spring and see if you have the same problem.

Nice smiley btw.

Ask yourself why the Bilstein B12 kit is packaged from Bilstein with the B8 shocks and 30mm lowering springs, for the E30 as an example. Why do they not package that with the B6 shocks?

I'm out.

I wasnt sure of the B12 setup as they dont do a B12 kit for the M3 ;0( but see that makes sense.

I have tried the shocks wiht the oe springs and still similar issues.

found another supplier saying:

This Bilstein suspension kit contains B6 Sport front and rear uprated dampers. Mostly suited for cars that require more precise handling but remaining at the o/e ride height or with minimal lowering

I think ill just bite the bullet and get the oem springs back on it.

cheers

John

In my experience with my E36 track car, which rides on high spring rates and adjustable dampers, ‘hoppy-ness’ or bounciness only comes from increasing the damping. When I set them to full soft, regardless of the high spring rates, the car feels hardly different to OEM except if you hit ridges in the road. By the way, my spring rates will be much higher than the H&R springs you have.

Regarding the bumpstops, I assume you mean ones which fit over the piston rod if you have fitted them yourself? Now, I may be way off here but are they meant to wear bumpstops considering they are monotube dampers and have built in bumpstops? I know you mention you used the Bilstein ones so if they were included in the kit then that confuses me. I have Bilstein coilovers to be fitted to my M3 road car and there are no bumpstops.

Thanks for post.

The rears have a bumpstop rubber on the shaft under the blue dust cover, and the fronts have a black internal bumpstop in the bottom of the front strut.

I had to cut the front down as part of the H&R Recommended install, but also have taken some out of the rear one too.

As for the rear shocks not needing a external bumpstop, not sure as it was in the box on the shocker shaft.

more q's lol.
