Most F1 Champions driving in same season

If Michael comes back racing next year there will be 4 champion/ex champions driving in the same season, is this a record or was there a time when there were more than 4 driving at the same time.

1971, 1972: G.Hill, Surtees, Hulme, Stewart

1973: G.Hill, Hulme, Stewart, Fittipaldi

1979: Fittipaldi, Lauda, Hunt, Andretti

However, there were 5 champions all together for the first race of the 1968 season: Brabham, G.Hill, Clark, Surtees, Hulme

And 5 again in 1970: Brabham, G.Hill, Surtees, Hulme, Stewart

Slightly off-topic but;

I remember reading a statistic that, since the F1 Championship was introduced in 1950, there has never been a year when either a previous, current or future F1 Champion from the UK has not competed.

That's a good pub quiz one.

There has been at least three races (when BAR Honda got a three-race ban) where that hasn't been a past/present/future UK champion though.

There was a gap of more than 12 months between James Hunt retiring and Nigel Mansell's first race in F1.

And I don't think Mike Hawthorn first raced in F1 until 1952 - which other brits raced in '50 and '51?

With the exception of the two early years referred to, this is correct. But given that GB has produced the world champion in 14 years out of the 60 championships, it is not surprising.

James Hunt's last race was the 1979 Monaco GP, Nigel Mansell's first was the 1980 Austrian. More than twelve months apart but they still competed in consecutive seasons.

1950 and 1951.

ETA: didn't notice the above comments! But yeah, Hawthorn was '52. Wikipedia shows I'm correct.
