Winter jobs progress
Discussion
Hi Guys
Thought i would just share with you my progress with my winter job/s.
As some of you know my SBC died shortly after SVA. I was going to get it repaired but had always wanted an efi system in the car but when i was sourcing my engine a few years back GD were quoting somewhere around the 20k mark for a fitted system so it was put on the back burner. As it happened a reasonably priced LS2 was offered to me for a similar sum required to repair my SBC, so i decided to go with that.
There is quite a bit of work to be done to do the conversion but of course the heart took over from the head and i plunged into the job.
Now i have to say that this isn't being totally done by myself. Kyle and Dave at Rushford Performance are helping enormously with technical support (those two words do not convey the amount of support that is going into this), a slight breathing on the engine which should (i hope) see us just crack the 500bhp barrier, supply of a set of custom LS headers and silencers, an ecu re-map and dyno setup and certainly most important for me personally an encouragement and huge lift in interest for finishing the car again. After 4 years of building and then only 500 miles on the road, things were a little low for me to say the least!
We've fitted most of the high pressure fuel system and modified the cooling system and the engine has been finished, though we are just waiting for two small components for this before we dyno it.
We have used Aeromotive fuel components, not cheap, I know but top grade kit.
Ive attached a couple of pictures you for you to have a look at.
It's definitely all work in progress so not particularly pretty yet.
The 'snorkel' type arrangement of the air filter is not quite finished. The 180deg tube will be shortened on the bottom leg to bring the filter further over the inlet manifold and it will also have a small support fitted that will lift the whole thing parralell to the rear clip and into the airflow of the scoop.
The exhaust system is a photo of the prototype system fitted to Kyles car. 2 inch primaries going into 4 re-packable silencers.
All the fuel mods are fitted onto a tray in the lower nearside of the engine bay.
So there you have it. So basically freezing my nuts off through winter .....again, but hopefully a few more trips out with you lot next year.
Oh and also ready for the supercharger upgrade to take me to 1200bhp.......................................... Ok Kyle get your neck back in, just pulling your leg!!

Thanks Stuart
We are trying to balance performance, with some noise control and reasonable looks. We have split with the mini x pipes to try and keep noise levels at around 96-98 db (for trackdays and IVA) and hopefully give a good balance between torque and top end puff.
We have managed to get 2" primaries at 24" long, with proper merge collectors and repackable silencers, its taken a lot of effort but im sure it will be worth it when we get the dyno results in Jan.
Ive been to see SS this week...... very impressive!!

Dave: the work looks assume, you should be very proud. I will say that if you intend to track day the car I would really consider a dry sump. I know its easy to spend another mans money but I am of the strong opinion that the repeated stories of main bearing problems is a result of wet sump systems being overwhelmed with the G force that an Ultima will generate. Again I am not an agent for A.R.E. Racing but I have thier system on my car and a Motec that lets me data log the system. Never saw a blink on the oil preesure while at the track. You have it out of the car now therefore it would seem to be the time to make the change. Just trying to insert some help full ideas. Lee
I used an Avid pump mounted on the lower left hand side of the motor looking forward. The pan is AREs new design that I had some input to. The original pan had three fittings on the right side of the pan that where not used, the new pan leaves those spots blank. I run the altenator in the valley between the Kinsler injection. The dry sump tank is mounted in the left front corner of the engine bay. We built a square tank that fits very nicley in the corner its very tall with an Orberg filter on top. This cuts all the plumbimg down to a minimum. Two lines off the pan to the inlet side of the pump. One line from the outlet of the pump to the filter inlet which flows out the bottom into the top of the tank. One line from the front of the pan which is connected to the stock pressure pump from the bottom of the dry sump tank. I have a oil cooler being built now that has an internal thermostat and bypass so that there are only two lines required to plumb the cooler to the motor instead of the usual three or four. Hope that helps. Lee
My jobs were
Finish EFI install properly
Install auto fire extinguisher system
Reinstall Can am mirrors correctly as whoever fitted them to my car made rear view non existent.
Install crutch straps to seat belts.
Nearly done just drivers crutch straps to do.
I am very happy with FAST EZ-EFI system it just gets better the more you drive. No rolling road no laptop just drive. Cold start without touching the throttle (even at -6) smooth idle even with aircon lights etc switched on. And boy does she go. Install is very tidy and twin tank still works as normal.
Need something else to do now. Cold air inlet or maybe height adjustable suspension.
Anybody know of a different source for the suspension than race car replicas? I just can't get them to answer my emails
