i need some new road wheels (well i dont need them at all, but i want some!...) to replace the stock ritcheys on the boardman.

at the moment, its a choice of;

planet x http://www.planet-x-warehouse.co.uk/acatalog/info_...
fulrcum racing 3 http://www.merlincycles.co.uk/?fn=product&prod...
mavic krysium elites http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/Mavic_Ksyrium_El...
dura ace http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?Par...
going second hand or any other clinchers under £500?
they all appear to be getting good reviews and with some ceramic bearings should be nice and fast, average weight is between 1400gs and 1550gs...

Dare I ask, why those? Whilst none of them are rubbish, for the same (-ish, depending upon how far you go) £££ you can get a good set of handbuilts. Advantages include easier/cheaper repair PLUS the wheels can be built exactly to your specifications.

The names mentioned most often include:

Depends what you are looking to use them for and what you have already.

For training, an open pro rim built onto an ultegra hub is what you want, sturdy, bombproof and good enough to race on if you need to - the perfect all round wheel for guys who don't race and the best training/winter wheel possible for those who do.

It you are looking for a really nice (read race) set of wheels, for £500, i would be looking at something like a secondhand pair of HED Jets

To elaborate on my earlier answer:

The Dura Ace wheels are stiff, light and far more aerodynamic than many deeper rims. See here:
http://www.rouesartisanales.com/article-15505311.h...

The hubs are so smooth (and are often used for handbuilts). They are also very strong (I hadn't had mine (the 7801 model) trued at all in over 2,000 miles, despite hitting numerous Surrey's potholed roads, and only had the front trued when I was hit by a car (even then it was only 2mm out).

They are also compatible with tubeless tyres, which, although I haven't tried them myself, are purported to be somewhat fantastic.

I can't think of any reason for choosing any of the others in the list over these, for that price. A really good all-rounder.

But handbuilts are certainly worth a look if you know what you want.

the idea is to buy a nice pair of race wheels so i dont have to worry too much about the ritchey rims whilst on the roads. whilst i am not implying that i am going to start aiming for potholes with them, i use them for everything at the moment, commutes, training, races etc thus they take a pounding and a nice pair of wheels for sunday best would be ideal!

the list wasnt exhaustive and a starter for ten really, just to see what was available <£500 factory built. more than happy to consider handbuilt options but it needs to be stay <£500! secondhand is an option but relies upon there being something worthwhile out there at the time.

i'm not winning any races, nor will i be able to dedicate the time to train to do so, but the plan is to upgrade components over the long term eventually leading to a purpose built (albeit on a budget) tri/tt bike.

Hmm, you have a few choices then, if your priority is TT/tri a front deep rim (like a new planet x or used 404/jet etc.) and your rear training wheel with a wheelcover is the best option.

If your priority is road racing with TTs/tris on the side is a set of deep carbon wheels(used jets,404s,cosmics, planet x etc.) with the option to go for a rear wheelcover in the future if you go more towards the TT side of things.

Worth checking places like tritalk and timetrialling forums for used carbon wheels, as they come up fairly frequently. Don't know where to buy wheelcovers in the uk, but i'm fairly sure wheelbuilder deliver overe here.
