I'm driving from LA to San Francisco next year and wanted to hire a decent Amercian car for a few days, but unfortunately all the mainstream providers don't have anything available / on the fleet so I'm a bit stuck - has anyone any idea of a good rental firm offering things like new Camaros, Challengers, Mustangs, Corvettes, Vipers etc for decent prices?

Any advice greatly appreciated!

Tom, Hertz do the Mustang in a convertible, hired a few from them, and I notice Avis have the new Camaro.

Take a look at The Marina Motel in SF, stayed there and had a great time. Every room has its own private garage underneath, handy as parking can be an issue.

Unless it is the GTH do not bother with the Mustang from Hertz.
Go for the Corvette instead (loads of trip reports floating around in this forum).

Some Avis places do the Camaro SS - Rob will be able to let you know how it handles next month thumbup

Oh I don't know. It was a nice car and drove well. Yes it was a V6 but I had it for 7 weeks and covered thousands of miles. Hertz were very helpful when we had a minor problem with our then brand new 06 model.

You are NOT allowed to take your hirecar onto the salt at Bonneville!

Cheers for info! I've tried Hertz but they didn't offer the Mustang at LAX...may call again and speak to someone else, the idea of the proper Hertz Mustang sounds good...

Nothing wrong with the regular mustang- i rent them from hertz @ LAX all the time. Quite cheap too.
Hertz Shelby GTH is ok- i don't particuarly like the fact its only available as convertible though so i just rent the regular one.

We did it via Hertz. Got their convertible Mustang, it was plenty fast enough for the daft speed limits out there. Outdragged a riced-up Civic off the lights in LA, and overtook a massive line of cars on a big bridge on Route 1. God that was fun. How I wish I was back there!

(another excuse to use that photo)

Oh, and a bloke in a hi-rise lifted Ford SUV (for proper off-roading) was sat next to me at the lights, we had the roof down, he shouted across "Nice car buddy!".
"Why thankyou. Not bad for a rental is it?" I replied in my best toff accent.
"You English buddy? I thought you guys only drove Minis! That's great that you chose an American car. Have a good holiday!" At which his massive truck blasted off leaving a nice big number 11 on the road, and me far behind. biggrin

I'm struggling with this as well. Avis do the Camaro, (one of their 'Cool Car' collection) but it seems you can only rent and return to the same place. I need to pick up in Ft. Lauderdale and return a few days later to Miami, but it looks as if I'll just have to slum it in a Cadillac. If anyone knows different, please post up here. I need to get it sorted in the next week.

We hired from Ft. Lauderdale and returned it to Ft. Lauderdale but the guy behind the counter would have let us return it to Orlando. Maybe give them a call?

Excellent! I'll give it a try. What did you think of the Camaro? I'm intent on buying one over here, so thought it'd be a good opportunity for an extended test drive.

Are they going to make a RHD one?

I just booked my trip this week so have done a lot of research in this area!

Unfortunately you pretty much have one option: Hertz.

If you pick up in LA and return the car to LA, check out Midway Car Rental, they have loads of exotic cars at all prices.

If you want to pick up in LA and drop in SF, then only really Hertz are for you...I tried to get a Corvette Convertible but they are sold out for pretty much the entire year, so settled for a Mustang Convertible.

I hope not. The Camaro shares a Holden chassis though, so it's a possibility.

Unfortunately, the 'Vette was a non-starter due to the amount of luggage Mrs. Tuono insists on lugging around. I've got a Mustang as a daily driver over here, so really wanted to try something different.

Why do you hope not? I'm sure plenty of people would buy one if it was. I would certainly take a look.
