Interesting article on the history of F1 points systems here:

http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/2009/12/22/think-the-ne...

New one is good, but it doesn't go far enough.

I think it should be:

Win - 1000 points.
Second - 100.
Third - 10.
Fourth - 1.
All other positions - zilch.

I'd like to see the NASCAR points system, points for fastest lap, most laps lead etc....

yes Whilst it is a little more complex for the spectator, it allows those teams not in with a chance of the win nonetheless to prioritise other ambitions and earn some points for them (not to mention additional exposure for their drivers' talents and their sponsors' brands).

It also (and I happen to think this is important) provides a definite learning curve for spectators, which increases the sense of belonging for those who understand it.

There should certainly be points for both pole and fastest lap, maybe most laps led too

I am looking forward to the new points system. It's a bit like the MotoGP system.

I think that there should be 5 points for pole and 5 points for fastest lap.

My problem with more points for pole, fastest lap etc. is handing the fastest car another advantage over his rivals - he's already starting from the front in the fastest car FFS. If he won points for the fastest qualifying lap maybe he should start from tenth, just to level things out a bit? Should increase the overtaking anyway.

Not a lot of difference with Bernie's medal idea.

I must admit to being a bit of a purist and I've always liked the idea in formula one that it is race results that count, nothing else. It's an achievement to get poles and fastest laps and it gives the staticians something to play with, but the bottom line is the position at the ne dof the race.

Fastest car wins. Isn't that how motor racing should be? Points for fastest laps would make the faster drivers more likely to go for it all the way through the race, rather than just naffing off into the distance and then slowing down so that they only go as fast as they need to, rather than as fast as they can.

A side effect is that you could get one of the back markers pitting until they've found a suitable gap and trying to do a qualifying-pace lap during the race.

I'm not sure how much that would happen. If they had a fast car, then they'd be at the front. With no refuelling, then the fastest laps will be towards the end anyway.

It should be the classic 10-6-4-3-2-1 system. Drivers are not paid a salary, but given £100k per point

This is the advantage of points for fastest lap; it might encourage drivers to go for it towards the end, not just settle for their current position.

PRECISELY!!

As far as I'm concerned the World Champion should be the driver who's won most races. End of story.

You don't get points in tennis, snooker, horseracing, cricket, etc do you? You either win the match or you don't.

When was that the "classic" points system? From the outset and for many years it was 9-6-4-3-2-1

Isn't the football league/premiership based on points? The FA Cup (or whatever it is called now) is based on wins.
