Anoying problem

Hi, any ideas what could be causing this.
Often when I boot my PC the speaker icon has a red no entry sign on it and the speakers dont work.
I have tried to change the settings but mute is selected, this will not change.
All I can do is use my Go-back software to reboot to the previous session when it was working.

Also IE6 often does not close properly, I close the window but when I try to shut down Windows I find that the web page is still open (although not visible as a process)and not responding.
Or sometimes I just get (unnamed program) not responding,
I assume this is also IE6.
When I reboot after this I find that my desktop is gone and I need to restore it.
