E39 ABS Warning Caption

My 1998 523i illuminated its ABS Warning Caption today when I was driving home.

I was slowing down (roads not icy) and it just came on as I was slowing for the 30mph limit. No unusal sounds or smells associated. For fault diagnosis, I applied the brakes hard when I was on my snow covered drive and the wheels locked up with no ABS available.

I have had the light on before but it cleared itself after a few miles of driving but not so this time.

Any ideas?

I have an '97 523i SE as well....ABS warning light, not the yellow TC light?

When i brake on snow/ice my pedal pulses/vibrates.

I had this on a 3 series, the ABS wheel sensor had failed. I think it was about £150 (this may be wrong, it was a while ago) for the densor and for the garage to work out which one had gone.

Yip definatley sounds like a whell speed sensor away, which will mean no ABS or TC
