Well, actually my girlfriend did last night at work. They heard something at the door and when they opened it they found a small Yorkshire Terrier (i think) and it was whimpering because it was so cold. She took it into work and helped warm it back up.

Now, the dog has a collar on with a phone number but my gf has been phoning this number all morning and not got any answer. The dog is really well trained and calm but it looks scruffy as hell. God knows how long it had been out in the cold for (it was -6 last night for us!!).

How long should we wait for the owners to answer our calls? My gf and her daughter have both fell in love with this dog already so i'd have no problems keeping it.

Should i take it to the vets and get it scanned for a microchip? Is it worth getting it looked at seeing as it was in the cold?

Ive been and bought some dog food but its not having any of it.

Please help!

I would suggest taking it to a local vet and explaining the situation. They will be able to check it for a micro chip and also check for any medical issues due to being cold/neglected. They may even know the owners.

After that a call to the local dogs home who would be able to offer further advice as to how to contact the owners.

Take it the the vets to check for microchip, in the meantime keep trying the number. It may be that their mobile is out of juice, or something has happened to the owner last night,

Hope dog gets happily reunited

Keep trying the number and try the vets for a chip.

If it has a collar with details it is not a stray, it'll be someones beloved pet.

Under no circumstances become attached with a view to keeping it. If it was me I would be at home sat by the phone waiting for it to ring.

I know what you are saying but it would hard to imagine how anyone who loves it could let it get into the state it's currently in.

I'll keep trying the number.

Thanks.

State? It was 'scruffy' a second ago.

The dog looks scruffy and is in a bit of a poor state.

Maybe that something has happened to its owners- (eg RTA or something)

If you're attached to it, imagine what the owners children 'could' be going through right now

Definitely take it to the vet, and keep the receipt just in case.. bloody expensive!!

Just read the 'not eating' bit, (missed it first time)

.....take it to the vet, even more so if it won't drink water either..

True! I am prepared to take a hit on the wallet providing the little thing is OK!

It's drinking water fine and has just ate a few little dog biscuits so it's getting there.

It's probably a bit nervous and shaken up if it's been out in the cold on it's own for a while, and can't find it's boss.

Take it to vet get it ck'd for a chip, they will phone dog warden, do this early to give more chance of contacting dog warden should they need to.

Re; it's state, don't jump to conclusions, it may belong to an elderly person who does not realise it's in a state or it's been running through bushes, yorkie hair doesn't take long too tangle!

I'm not saying it is ok to be left in a mess but there can be genuine reasons.

good luck!

Hate to say it but people do just abandon their pets. So I appreciate all the owners will be missing him comments, but it could just be that the poor thing has been kicked out of his home. The fact the phone isn't being answered concerns me.

Sadly found a cat that had been run over. Cat had a collar with a tag. Phoned the number to tell the owner that their cat was no more. The response? We don't own a cat!!! Now although technically true, they didn't know it at that point in time.

Some people are just aholes who shouldn't be allowed within 10 feet of an animal.

I could of course be wrong, but just putting another slant on things.

Poor thing frown

It must be terrified, losing its Master/Mistress and being rescued by strangers.

I'd echo the advice above, do not let them get attached to it, get it to the Vet to check to chip, stay by the phone/keep ringing the number on the collar.

I'd add a further bit - take a photo and put some posters up on the street corners near where you found it.

Once it is sorted out - take a trip to your local rescue centre and get one smile
