Hi Guys - I am going to install a Pioneer AVIC system in my MK1 over Christmas. I know a couple of you guys already have a similar unit installed. Where did you put the hideaway unit (brainbox)? and what about the GPS antenna? All tips are welcome. Thanks.

On the factory fit, the hideaway box goes under the trim on the transmission tunnel, just behind the gearstick. Plenty of room under there - in fact, I've got a tv tuner unit under there as well.

Don't know where the antenna is - never noticed it anywhere. I've got a feeling it may be under the dash behind the head unit - seem to remember reading somewhere that it can 'see' through glassfibre.

My factory fit DAB unit is in a cavity inside the rear wall of the boot.

There's another cavity there too - may be useful?

Although I have a Kenwood system not the Pioneer, I too put the hideaway unit under the centre consul behind the gearstick/handbrake. I placed the antenna on top of the radio cage before sliding the head unit in, seemed like the ideal place as it has a magnetic base, not had any problems with the GPS signal even with the roof on.

I have one fitted in my car, the control guff is all under the transmission trim, bit of a squeeze mind. To be precise, its right at the front.

Which one are you going for?

Just had a quick Google ad these seem to come in at £249 with ipod, sat nav and bluetooth - thats really good value for money.

....must resist......

Michiel - did you get this done ok? I've just had the trim off the transmission tunnel on mine and noticed that the gps antenna is under there as well (quite far back, under the rear window)

I ultimately had the hideaway unit and ipod adaptor installed under the dash (carpet area) at the passengers side. The GPS antenna is hidden behind the headunit itself. It all looks great, I will post some pics somewhere next week as currently the headunit is being repared by Pioneer (the screen did not fold into vertical position). Thank you guys for all the tips!
