E46 Problem with Drivers Door not locking

Had this problem a couple of times since I've owned the car over the last 6mths but yesterday with the cold weather things have got alot worse.
Basically the car occasionally thinks the drivers door is open when its not. This causes loads of problems such as the alarm going off, window going up and down 5mm and interior lights constantly on. Yesterday this problem was more or less constant. I'd lock the car with the key (no alarm) and the interior lights would be on within 5minutes. The pain is when the car is then opened to turn them off the window goes all the way down.
After trying lots of things finally had to disconnect the battery. Any suggestions ? My local garage is all closed up now until the 4th Jan.
