I couldn't point you at any specific places in Yorkshire, never having been there, but google something like 4x4 pay & play yorkshire and you should get some results.
As for how much to start with, it of course depends on what you want. You can get a little Suzuki SJ 2 seater in very good condition for well under £500. Landrovers tend to be more expensive (or complete sheds) or you can also look at larger Japanese stuff starting around £1k, although these will be more costly to fix than Landrovers when they do break because the parts tend to be far more costly.

If you've got to drive it on the road as well (even just to get there and back) i prefer a Disco TDi.
Most important upgrades would be (listed in order of preference to get you going if you cant afford to do it all at once)
Nobbly tyres
Diff/Sump Guards
Lift Kit
Rock Sliders
Snorkel
None of these are that expensive to buy particularly if you use ebay. I paid 300 for new huge wheels and nobbly tires, bout 100 for all guards, bout 2-300 for 3" lift kit with shockers, bout 200 for rock sliders and 2oo for snorkel and 300 for a straight disco from leominster auction. The car would tackle about anything you threw at it.
Most important upgrades would be (listed in order of preference to get you going if you cant afford to do it all at once)

Personally i would steer clear of the lift kit, if you must change the stock suspension then i'd be going for longer travel as opposed to hight.
The lowest part of your vehicle is still the diff casings which will ground you, only bigger tyres will solve this problem but there's always a trade off in other areas doing that.
Better articulation of the axle will help keep the tyres in contact with the ground and giving better traction, a lift kit will not help you here.
If you go down the Discovery route then spend your pennies on 235/70/16 MT tyres and uprate the steering bars to prevent them bending.
Remove the towbar, unwind the steering lock stops. Unless your planning on serious wading in water then a snorkel is just show, if you are going wading then you must also sort the axle breathers to.
My advice is TYRES (Insa sahara) and then just enjoy the damn thing.
