Wikipedia asking for donations - Wouldnt you just start ads?
Discussion
I went onto wikipedia this morning to see a large banner at the top of the page that linked to this page:
http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/AppealCH/uk?ut...
The guy who set it up is asking for donations in order to keep it going but given the site's popularity, wouldnt it just be easier to have one advert per page?
The revenue he could generate would be huge!
I know the guy is on a crusade to provide free information for everyone, but at the end of the day if you could sell advertising space or even sell the whole thing to Google/Microsoft for millions of dollars, you would, wouldnt you???

If they have advertising, would that not be some sort of vested interest if someone was to write an article on the sponsor?
Being free from advertising allows the website to offer an unbiased opinion, unlike the BBC
In the light of the recent 'Climategate' revelations, it appears that many Wikipedia articles have been studiously rewritten to exclude the Medieval Warm Period, so I certainly take anything it says with a large pinch of salt.Being free from advertising allows the website to offer an unbiased opinion, unlike the BBC

I believe that it has lost a lot of contributors because of perceived 'vested interest' bias.
I have found Uncylopedia to be an unerring source of accurate content:
