Despite my hatred of Labour, I do quite like Jack Straw. From what I can tell he is quite a hard-liner who'd seems to want all these people locked up for far longer than they usually are, especially with murderers. But sadly having lost a lot of his powers he often fails to do this.

Well, it's the country where any illegal immigrant in Europe will try and head for. France & Germany for example have much more generous social systems but they make sure that they are used as much as possible only by their legal citizens. The UK has a much less generous system but it's so simple to get into. Why do you think the 1000s of illegal immigrants in Calais make such an effort to get into the UK?
