If everything goes to plan I'll have one of these to open when SWMBO gets up - CLICKY

They also do a non HD version for less brass and rollcage mounts are available.

As a crimble present to myself (and my motor) I have just got a Kodak Zi8 and a Fat Gecko mini suction mount for some road trips next year. Obviously being a suction mount it's no good for track use but the quality is good for around £25, camera was £115.
Video quality is excellent for the price (up to 1080p or 720p@60fps) and includes an external mic socket so you can run a mic round to the exhaust or engine bay should you want to. Check out Youtube for 720 vids (ignore any vids that say they are 60fps, youtube only does 30fps).
To get the best from it update the firmware, it irons out a few glitches from the box (jerky zoom cured and low light better etc.).
Anyone recommend a mount for a cage, headrest or internal mirror etc. for track use?

Try the contour HD or HD 1080 from dogsport cam (Other retailers are available. 135 deg viewing angle and good quality. Good choice of rollbar mounts aswell.

Video link below. Image quality poor from compression and not the camera.

In car camera is from Canon G9 compact camera.

I use a Dogcam bullet camera recording to a standard Sony DV camera. Its very cost effective and reasonable quality. Some examples below:

I use a 4Kam Action ready package. The problem with this is the picture quality isn't amazing but it's not bad, and also it is very fiddly with lots of wires, plugs and battery packs. It wouldn't be a problem in a normal car but in the Caterham all the wires get in the way and make it difficult to use.

Here is a link to their site: http://www.4kam.co.uk/helmet_camera_bullet_cam_pac...

It comes with bullet camera, recorder and microphone. Here is a video I took: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=teCfu-DDQo8

However I would recommend the Go Pro HD Wide Camera. I have never used it but by looking at the simplicity of use and the quality of video it looks a great deal. I am considering upgrading and selling the 4Kam kit, but it is a good £100 more than the 4Kam.

Here is a great video of the Go Pro HD Wide: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OI7x706ODVM

Thanks for that, appreciated. Go pro hd does look like a simple option, saves all the hastle. Will have a look to see if they do a roll cage mount

I honestly can't remember, its somewhere in the loft waiting for summer. Not a ridiculously expensive one, think it was £300-ish a couple of years back.

Its getting harder and harder to find Mini-DV cameras with a camera input now... No doubt down to the MPAA.

Damm right it is,

Ive been bidding on a few on ebay and missed out on them. I dont want to spend silly money as I just want to compare the quality with my DVR which goes a bit blocky in changing light conditions. Watching another at present, fingers crossed.

has anyone tried the contour hd? the go pro HD has a wide angle lense which might not be ideal for a rear mount roll cage fiting, these look good

It depends on what you want and how long it will or could last.

I had a sony camcorder and bullet cam with roll-bar mount, on my previous R400 Caterham.

But the stiff suspension and hard work on track days killed the camcorder unit itself.

So I made the decision to go fully solid state, and went for one of these units:

Here is some footage in my R500 at Oulton park.

Its been totally reliable so far!!

Hi David,

Thanks for the comment about the video, but I cant take credit for that one, as its not my video, or even my mum or car!!

I just liked a video on youtube, then as it was linked to my facebook page, people saw the link, and everyone assumed it was my video!!

Its a very funny video though!!

I use a Canon Legria camera. Chosen for 2 reasons: it records to SD card, so no moving parts in the recording mechanism and it has a mic socket, which is important to me as it is in an open car.

Sample footage can be viewed here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Br12PgRofo

The camera is mounted on the "mushroom" from a window mount which is affixed to the Petty strut of my roll bar. I also have a cable tie through the camera strap, so that if it does slip off its mounting it will end up in the passenger footwell and not outside the car.

Poor picture quality is due to compression, not camera.
