Anyone tried fitting platform type coilovers to the front , any pics available ? Is it a big improvement in handling to the original large springs ?

the biggest improvement is to re-bush the complete front.

if not done, put the coil-over idea into the bin.

I've been considering this, and having spoken to Richard Thorpe, it is necessary to strengthen the top mounts an the lower wishbone, so not a bolt-on solution.

So what is meant by 'strengthening ' ?

Didn't go into detail with him, other than welding was involved around the turret area and the 2 studs that secure the lower end of the damper. For me, this is not a diy solution - I would leave it to an expert. I don't know whether the Tazzie racers had such mods, but if they did, RT would know why and how.

Happy xmas guys. I'm midway through the coilover conversion process. What I can tell you is that to have complete confidence in your setup - you should consider strengthening the upper and lower mounts. The picture below is proof!

I have since done away with the upper turret completely and have installed fabricated mounts welded in by a professional. The next phase is to alter the lower wishbone to accomodate a permanent lower mount that allows easy replacemnt and adjustment. My existing setup is dependant on the lower shock mount platform which could in theory collapse if weakened by rust etc. Although it does the job at the moment I'm not confident when driving hence the desire for a more confident solution. One needs to appreciate that the lower shock platform was originally designed to deal only with the forces exerted by the shock not including the spring.

The lower mod once welded in should represent a much stronger and more confident solution - I'll post some pics once I'm finished in a couple of weeks. What I have in mind is something straightforward and easy to install and to weld into place.
