At low speed hovering flight i can under stand how a normal chopper turns by using the tail rotor.

A chinook doesn't have a tail rotor so how does it turn on the spot?

Not all helicopters have tail rotors.

The Kaman and Kamov designs often feature contra-rotating main rotors.

The Defender range of helicopters use air blown through the tail boom.

Which one? One or both?

Both tilt same way for roll?

Both tilt opposite way for yaw?

Pretty much. I remember asking a chap at work this, as he'd flown the Chinook previously (although mostly Puma, Whirlwind(!) and Vulcan B1. Can't be too many pilots who flew both rotary and nuclear-armed V-bombers in their career). Pretty clever flight control system telling the swashplate in each rotor hub what to do, and AFAIK both rotor discs tilt in opposition for yaw.

Anyone seen the RAF Chinook display in recent years? It's a spectacular demonstration of what can be done with such a large helicopter. I particularly like the 270 degree quickstops.

Saw it at Duxford a couple of years ago. Very impressive.

yes I took these at the Cosford airshow in 2004, it was the first time I'd seen a Chinook doing a display, never realised the old egg beater was so manoeuvrable.

I got to have a poke around one in 7 Squadron's hanger once in Odiham when I was there doing a refresh of their computers, they also tried to make me drink my own weight in tea whilst I was there! biggrin

I couldn't help but laugh when my mates 3 year old son pointed at the Police helicopter and shouted "I can see the man in the helicockter!" the other day biggrin
