Sounds very much like a worn out clutch fella, the burning smell will be you slipping the friction material, if there were problems with the dual mass you would get things like lumpy idle, poor starting and when bad metallic noises.

As said though, you now sound like you need a clutch and the best advise i can give you is have the dual mass replaced at the same time, i have done a few clutch changes on customers cars and after a short while afterwards the dualmass give problems leading to the job having to be done again, bite the bullet and get a complete kit, clutch, slave cylinder and the dual mass, cheaper in the long run trust me.

What Carl said (although to be honest, replacing the flywheel even for a solid one is going to be stupid £££). A dual mass flywheel failing would probably give a loud CLUNK as you come on and off the power. What you have described is just clutch friction surfaces wearing out.

Your best bet is to phone your local independent garages and ask. I think for the clutch they have to drop the front sub-frame, which needs to be bolted back in very accurately afterwards or else it can throw the suspension geometry out. This means that prices can vary quite a lot, depending on how much they know about V6 Mondeos.
