first time iv ever driven on a road so bad. the road near bridge of alford. wow. the whole road was polished ice across the whole thing for 5 or 6 miles. and i mean smooth frozen lake style ice. so i decided to do some testing on it. jump on the brakes abs goes mental car doesnt stop for ages.
same speed try and brake at a level just before the abs kicked in stopped a bit quicker.
tried only engine breaking and comming down the gears. well there was so little rolling resistance the car stalled in 2nd or 1st.

tried the same again but feathering the throttle on the downshift to help engage the gear. this worked and combined with braking trying to avoid using the abs i stopped the quickest.

quite interesting to try out different techniques.

I'm a big fan of that - in the snow, in a controlled envoronment, it's good to brake heavily to get a feel for what abs is like when it kicks in, etc. It also gives you a good idea of the level of grip of the surface you're driving on, and allows you to tailor your driving style to suit.

Agreed... I nearly always find a quiet spot and 'test conditions'.

Often a good idea when you notice a change in conditions or surface.
Amazing how much difference 2 or 3 celcius can make to tyre performance down at the chilly end.

clio dude. and the abs kicks in far too soon.

terrible car in the wet but seems very capable in the snow /ice. i guess narrow tyres relatively heavy diesel engine.
