I was given one for a major birthday and love the look of it

wore it very occasionally to special occasions but wihin 12 weeks it had "locked up" and stopped

sent it back and it was fixed under warranty

4 years later its done it again

As before ,I wear it very occasionally and treat it very carefully (still looks new ),it must have the equivelant of 6 months wear on it

I am always going to be shelling out to fix it ?

My other (cheaper !) watches have run faultlessly

not impressed

Sounds like you've got a friday afternoon watch mate. I've got a 1998 model that I've had since March and it's been faultless.
Runs a wee bit quick, but I just put that down to my all action lifestyle.

When you say it "locked up" what do you mean? Did it just stop or did you push some combination of buttons to make it lock up? I have a JLC and there is a combination which I can use to stop the watch. Don't know if the TAG movement has this?

No they are not. I have not had a problem with any of my Tags (which includes 2 Monacos) over several years of ownership. You might, as already noted, have a Friday one or it
might be that it prefers to be worn more - I'm sure someone could come up with a convincing story about lubes, bearings and seals drying out...

Mine runs as accurate as anything in the watch box and has only failed me once, and that was because i'd dropped it. I do try and wear it at least once a couple of weeks though.

You've had the watch for four years and used it for 6 months of that time - there is your problem

No but depending on the movement and the angle and temperature the watch is left sitting at the lubricants can clump or decay. Mechanical watches need to be worn regularly hence the existence of watch winders.

this comes up very regulary on watch forums and here actually.

in my own experience all my watches work fine without a winder, my older watches that are now out of favour still work brilliants and they probably get wound up once a year.

I think winders mainly exist for those watches that are a bit of a pain to set - my JLC, with day, month and date takes a little while to set correctly: a winder would avoid that.

I got the monaco gulf edition ( the one with the saphire case back and limited to 2500)

I have just noticed that the hour hand does not align perfectly when the minute hand is at 12.

For example, If it is 3 o clock and the minute hand is at 12, the hour hand is a few minutes before 3.

Is this normal, or are tag monaco pants??

Whatever the watch the hour and minute hand should be perfectly aligned at 12 o'clock. Yours needs to go back .

Not pants judging by what they've got inside:

http://www.calibre11.com/tag-heuer-monaco-range/

When you say the watch Locked Up- do you mean that you took it out of the box, wound it/shook it and nothing happened, or do you mean that when you dis/engaged the chronograph, the watch stopped running?

no
when I took it out the box ,it did not run
the mainspring would not wind manually and the chronograph buttons do not move
although if you do the horizontal swivel thing it will start ticking but it soon stops
Beaverbrooks reckon the mainspring is locked (again)
so it off to the menders (again)

not impresed

Leaving watches sat around for a long time is definitely not good. I had one that wouldn't start or if it did it would run for a while then stop. The PO had it sat in a safe for a year prior to that it ran fine for a decade. I sold it and the next guy got lucky it started for him and ran for about a week as he wore it 24/7 then it stopped and he had it serviced. All it needed was freshly lubricating, note that it had been religiously serviced prior to my ownership up to being left in the safe. Watches that I don't wear much I try to wind up every couple of weeks or wear for at least a couple of days every month. This way I know that the rotor if an auto is not being unnecessarily worn out on a winder and in any case the occasional use insures the oils don't pool or dry out.

Mine stopped within 2 weeks of buying it (second hand Gulf edition - but under warranty).

Have returned it. Hoping it was a fault - getting the Monaco LS instead. Again, with warranty.

I was quite disappointed, I have to say.

just my opinion, but I tried a few monaco's on recently whilst searching for my rectangle faced purchase and i can honestly say i thought they werent that great build wise, felt a bit 'flimsy' and were quite overpriced. wasnt impressed.
