Folks, going to the Playhouse on 2nd Jan and we need to do food.

Any recommendations?

I'm not too hot on the eateries of Edinburgh....

TIA

Depends what you're looking for, but I went to The Conan Doyle, 71-73 York Place only a few months back. And the food was scrummy, or my bean burger anyway. Very busy, and I would assume all their food is the same.

Plus it's only two minute from the Playhouse.

I have no idea of its theatre geography but this place http://www.wedgwoodtherestaurant.co.uk/ had fab food this summer.

Guilliano's is an Italian directly opposite the Playhouse, which isn't bad. Need a reservation usually for the "posher" bit in the back - the front bit is a bit..."takeaway". Seems cater more for families than couples though, if that's a concern.

Mama's in the Grassmarket does the best pizzas around imo.

Time 4 Thai on North Castle Street is good value without suffering a drop in food quality.

George St has a lot of restaurants - Brown's does good solid food, Gusto is a good Italian (used to be Est Est Est). The Lounge is excellent, as is Olo Rosso. Both of those two are a bit pricier though.

Fishers, The Raj, Malmaison, The Kitchin (sic) and Martin Wishart's down on the Shore in Leith are all worth a visit too.

There's loads of kebab/burger joints down Leith Walk too wink

Enjoy "We Will Rock You" wink

Oh and there's a swathe of the usual chain stuff next door in the Omni if you're just after something cheap and cheerful.

I can highly recommend kublai khajuraho mongolian buffet in Leith, Google it for more info and directions, but its a really good experience as well as good food.

For pre-theatre @ Playhouse personally I would either go here: http://www.phuket-pavilion.co.uk for Thai or
http://www.vittoriarestaurant.com for italian which is little way down leith walk but with the trip.
HTH cheers Ed

If your feeling flush and want to go for something a bit more speshal then try http://www.hawkeandhunter.co.uk/ ranked no 8 in the top 50 places to eat in the world.

Work night out was really good couldnt fault the food and its across the road from the playhouse.

I was at "The Dogs" on Hanover St last month and it was pretty tasty. Proper Scottish food too. Casseroles, Steak pies etc.
