Eager to hear info. Mate and I are on the lookout for a couple of cheapo 4x4's for a bit of greenlaning and pay n' play smile

How long have you been looking into it - have you been advised to look for a landcruiser or what? smile

No not really, thinking of either one of these or a Fourtrak.

My Grandad run one on road (model before the one you're asking about) for about 10 years. Never washed, hardly ever serviced and it never let him down. He loved it, and only sold it when my Nan could no longer clamber in hehe

I'm weighing up between a shogun and a disco.

Had a 3.0 Shogun in the family for ages now. I drove it for a year or so, and now my Mum uses it for towing, rescuing puny cars from fields, loading up with the shopping etc. It's honestly been faultless - not even needing consumables. Had an exhaust manifold last year, and gets an oil/filters change annually. That's it!

Big draw for the disco is how cheap they are to service / upgrade. You worry about the reliability of Land Rovers, but my mate has a 300Tdi that doesn't seem so bad. On the other hand, my old man has a 4.6HSE P38 Rangie that is horrendous hehe

I guess you just need to buy on condition.

How much do you have to play with?

You should be able to get a very decent Shogun/Pajero for that.

Had an 89" SWB cruiser for a year or two, VERY reliable and next to nothing but oil & filter change.

Would say that for use between cane markers off- road though, it was easy to lose points. Catching them with the wheel arch flares,
Turning circle was outstanding though, as axle articulation

Let us know what you end up with

not a landcruiser exactly, but another form of jap crap, might give you something to think about,

I have a 92' swb mitsu pajero and its a great machine! have taken it off road numerous times and easily keeps up with my mates landies (a 90 and a disco tdi) another thing you will find is if you go for the jap imports your likely to get alot more for your money, mine has digital aircon (freezing), elec windows, folding elec mirrors, sunroof, you get the idea, basically plenty of creature comforts to keep you happy while your out plugging through the mud!

Only thing ive found is the fuel consumption is abit heavy, but if your only using it for abit of fun and not everyday use i dont think that would be too much of a problem? tax isnt too bad either being an import, circa 180 quid, not bad for a 2.5tdi! smile

hope this helps smile

I have a 1994 KZJ70 Landcruiser. The 70 series are unstoppable and unbreakable. I bought mine because I wanted something as good as a Landy off road without having to deal with being cold, wet and uncomfortable. I struck gold with my KZJ70, Ive lost count of how many times Ive recovered other stuck 4x4s including Landys.

The LJ70 has the 2.4 Diesel which is ok but can be a little gutless at times especially if you plan on doing some motorway driving. If you can find one then go for the KZJ70 which has the 3.0TD.
