My parents have given me a 1/2 inch gammon steak - having never cooked it myself before, I'm not sure of the best method.

I assume I can pop it in the oven, or fry it?

Any suggestions most welcome!

Flash fry on each side, then oven finish.

Or grill.

Pan fry for sure. Blob of nice olive oil, and if you care, you can sweeten it up slightly by gently melting a bit of brown sugar into the oil.

I like the idea of pan frying. How long does it need?

Apologies for the silly q's, never cooked Gammon before...

about a couple of a minutes each side. In any event you will see the texture of the meat change as you fry it. Very nice if you fancy going retro and sticking a pineapple ring on top!

Gammon steak with chips and a fried egg on top, luvverly.

I always find the steak curls when cooking though, anyway to avoid this other than putting a weight on it?

I assume you've cut the fat?

cut the fat every 10mm or so, Grill. Serve with Chips and a Fried Egg & definately no beans!
EFA.

If you're hungry, just have another. Under no circumstances are beans acceptable. Even on an old-school classic such as this.

If you turn the gammon regularly enough the gammon will not curl up and there will be no need to cut the fat.
