If one was so inclined, and had sufficient resources, could you put together a mercenary squad/army and go Pirate Hunting off the coast of Somalia?

Wouldn't it be more lucrative to hire team of whackjobs and become a pirate?..first killing off the competition?

Possibly, although then you would be pissing off proper countries with an Army and Security Services and everything.

Are you allowed to carry arms in international waters?

Perhaps you could make money another way

Might help if you were a Ninja.

On a more serious note the pirates that operate of Somali tend to be armed would not want to take them on myself without having Navy style fire power.

We retired HMS Vanguard way too early. We should have mothballed it, having a cruiser as our sole big gun (that's not that big) ship of the 20th century was a disgrace. Then they could have dusted it off, upgraded the radar and sent it back out like the US Navy did with the Iowa class ships.

No pirate would want to mess with a big gun, or eight.

Well the current lot seem to be keeping busy. They need to diversify though when the market dries up, branch out into mugs, tees and action figuresbiggrin

Have you any idea of the cost of such a scheme. You don't just "dust off" a battleship. And the cost of making 15-in ammo, sheeeeesh................

Perhaps because it appeared to be a serious suggestion.

Now a diesel/electric submarine armed with quad 50s, that is practical, cheap and effective.

Or a movie franchise! "Pirates of the Indian Ocean" has a nice ring to it.

No SB, I've absolutely no idea of the costs to re-commission HMS Vanguard, and I'm more than curious as to the costs of 15" ammo. Not taking the p*ss, just have no idea...

All conjecture but..........

A WAG, but it could be about £15000 a pop. I doubt very much if the technology and skill is around to make the propelling charges.
