Hope someone may be able to help, sorry for the long winded post....

After having a normal sky box fitted in my home for around eight years we have decided to upgrade to Sky + HD.

Now in all this time the box has never been fitted to a telephone line for the interactive features as we have had no interest in using them.

So, when the "engineer" came from Sky we said "Don't bother with the phone connection, we don't use it"...

He said "Sorry, I have to connect it, it's part of the contract, there's no way round it...Sky insist this is done"

The main reason I was reluctant was the nearest wall phone socket downstairs is in the kitchen, which is through the main hallway, around 20 metres away...

To further complicate things, my new viewing card had not arrived on Monday, it had been held up because of snow and the Christmas post, so the engineer could not do anything without that.

So, he fitted the new HD+ box, and linked the phone line up to the new box with a long white cable, but left it lying loose on the carpet, leaving me to fit it under the carpet next to the skirting board when he had gone, which I did do as carefully as posible, bearing in mind I had to try and avoid all the Gripperod strips.....

He said, when the card does turn up, just ring Sky and they will connect you up with a signal.

Fast forward to yesterday (Tuesday) the new viewing card turned up....(six days late)...

I rang Sky three times trying to get connected, speaking to three different call centre staff....(Two in India) but they said they could not connect me because I did not have a working telephone connection.....rage

Now, the only thing I can think off is I damaged the delicate cable tucking it round all the corners, and through doorways, although as I said, I tried to be very careful.

So, what I am planning on doing is taking the cable up again, buying another one and lying it temporarily OVER the flooring, ringing sky AGAIN and connecting up.

This is my question...finally...smile

When I am finally connected by Sky, if I unplug the telephone connection a couple of hours later...nerd and do without it, would Sky ever know, and could they cut me off?

I must say I have no problem with being connected per-se, it's just the bloody wall socket is a long way away..........grumpy

The easiest thing to do would be to fit a telephone wall socket behind the TV, but I don't really want to go to the bother and expense...

Thanks in anticipation....biggrin

Telephone cable is only used for box office and possibly to report viewing habits.

You can ditch it, engineers have to connect it for Sky rules but if you don't use box office often, ditch it.

Card and box bonding happens over the air.

as far as im aware, the contract states you must have the telephone connected for 12 months.

i think they do random checks on your system to see if its still connected, if its not, they send you a note and if you fail to keep it connected for the 12 months, they will charge you full price for the installation.

i may be wrong tho!

At 20m your phone cable is probably too long, I had problems with phones upstairs not working and this turned out to be the problem.

Take the cable up.

Leave loose running through the house. Plug into sky box into phone line. Get Sky to do call back, once complete you don't have to have it plugged in, you just won't be able to get box office etc.. Without ringing up Sky.

I have the same problem, i only got one phone socket in the house, when i got my SKY+ HD upgrade they did plug it into the phone socket for the initial setup which i may add they did with the new card, and then they said i was free to remove it, which i did, with no side effects i occaisionally get a message suggesting i should plug in, but the back up button rids that. Unfortanely they work the installers to the bone and give them sod all time to do it, guess thats why he cut and run, when i think they should come back to finish the set up now you have the correct card.

Occasionally, the box will "phone home". If it tries to, and is disconnected, you will get an on screen message to tell you to connect it to the phone line. If you ignore it, eventually they are supposed to stop working ?

In reality, once connected for the first time,I've never heard of them checking again.

.....oh, and in before this gets moved to some obscure forum? hehe

ETA:

Home cinema & HI-FI eh?

Do you have broadband internet connection at home? If so, have you fitted a filter to the telephone cable going to your Sky + box?

Had the same problem with both my Sky boxes - a filter cures the problem.

Isn't it used to download the "Anytime" programmes or is that OTA as well? And what about the recent upgrade to the menue interface was that also over the air? confused

Hmmm, yes, we do have broadband...(Be)...with five different people sometimes using it at the same time....Me, Mrs WR and three sons.......Although last night only three of us were using it.

It might be something simple like I've caught the cable though.........scratchchin

Nope.

Anytime shows are transmitted on a specific channel and automatically recorded and the menu upgrade was also done OTA.

90 minutes work for what used to be £22.

That's why they do five a day.

Bear in mind that a number of the other four will be straight box swaps and they'll probably walk from one on the basis of height or the like.

Or be damned luck find that there is a dish they can share, the sky installer to our flat couldn't get a good angle and didn't have the supports for a chimney mount so put a quad head on the currently fitted dish, of course if downstairs want multiroom sky plus then there could be an issue.

Just to clear some things up:

You ONLY need the phoneline connected when pairing your card and box - it can be removed as soon as the engineer has gone (so no need to run under the carpet etc)

The phoneline connection is ONLY needed for box office and the interactive stuff. Keep the phoneline in a cupboard and plug it in as and when you need to use it.

Sky won't care about the phoneline connection unless you have multiroom - then they use it to prove both your boxes are at the same premises

You don't need it connected for bonding, that can happen OTA as well.

Err, should have mentioned in my original post it WAS a "multiroom" installation......Perhaps I do need to have a connection then?

Also does the "second set" have to be connected up to a phone line, because the engineer just left the lead from the back of the "original" sky box loose on the floor.....

Nothing directly related to the OP, but Sky are the worst company to deal with ever!!

I cannot wait to cancel my Sky contract, which I will be doing in the next few days when I get a new TV with Freeview.
