Try www.intellitronix.com/streetrd.html
for digital guages you can arrange yourself.

Did anyone ever thought of using the Motec steering wheel dash. It's all digital and programmable. But not sure if it could be used on the streets. It also comes with paddles on the back.

A setup like the adequate speed ultima looks like a custom job (very nice it is too). The guy who built it knows a lot about industrial displays/control configuration, I/O to senders etc.

Try the following link as a starting point for your own setup.

www.tridentdisplays.co.uk

You'd need to select a PC which could handle all the I/O and if you can write software in Windoze using a RAD tool like Delphi or VB. A whole raft of industrial software control components are available that can be used off the shelf.

I personally favour analogue gauges for pressure/volt readings and perhaps configurable digital displays for Revs, speed etc.

Either way I haven't seen an off the shelf ultima setup (yet).

Not sure that I'd trust Windoze to run quickly enough (or reliably - Blue Screen at 180mph anybody). You'd be far better off just getting hold of a simple microprocessor solution (something like an ARM7 would give you everything you'd ever need and much more) with the code stored in flash.

You could always contact the AdequateSpeed guys. If they've done it for themselves, they might be willing to do it for you (for the right price).

It would take 5 minutes to start up as well, WindowsCE perhaps? yes I agree Microshaft is a flawed choice. For the non-embedded software engineers among us it might be the cheapest/quickest route to a digital dash of the adequatespeed quality.

I wonder about the value of such a setup as well though. What happens if you have a problem with the electrical system? Do you really want to depend on a laptop/PDA if you can't power the display?

Lots of nice possibilities (i.e. GPS etc). What the hell, if you want one go make one thats the beauty of this stuff.

Erm, it runs DOS, which is more than stable enough to run the I/O and the graphics routines without ever crashing.

There is a compiled linux kernel in developement, but this has been shelved as the current version is stable enough!

DOS?! well if ain't broke don't fix it eh?

What has been your experience with the setup? good? bad? was it worth investing the time and money?

I'm not going to make one myself, just interested to know the reasoning behind the setup.

!! please ignore if you are not a softie !!

Dos was very much a get it done quick solution.

It allows you to disable all interupts to you get predictable real time ness to the system. (unlike windows)

Ideal solution would be a VxWorks / QNX solution but it is a bit tricky to get the graphics library and they usually cost if you want to use all the features of these embedded OSs. I did have a quick look at it but its just not as simple as DOS and not as quick to boot up.

Development is still ongoing to make it more easily configurable.

The solution currently has analouge dials (digital but drawn as a clock) and an alternative screen which can be selected (whilst driving if you are feeling flash bastard) of a WRC type display with a big bar rev counter and digtal read outs for the others.

The reason behind the whole thing was firstly a proof of concept and secondly to bring the ultima out of the dark ages and make it feel liek a truly modern WRC / Le Mans car. Both WRC focus and Bently LMP have colour LCD dashes based arround similar technogy.

As for it it was worth it? Yes because it looks good.

Reliability - No problems what so ever. However the software has been tested and contratint analysed during development so no crashes, at least not for 4000 miles. If it can be safe and reliable for the displays on your holiday airliner there is no reason why it cant be done for a car.

I have had quite a bit of interest in it which is why I cam continuing the development. I will kep you posted.

If anyone is serious about it then drop me a line

Sorry!! I now check it far more frequently

Currently It can monitor up to 48 channels but thats only becasue there is onyl one 48 cahnnel card in there. I dont know the limit but I am sure 96 or 144 would be quite easy

Has anyone ever put superbike instrumentation in an Ultima ?

I like the idea of using the system out of something like a Hayabusa or GSX-R. It's compact, light and gives you pretty much everything you need right in front of you.
I used to own a few GSX-R's and really liked the analogue tacho and digital speed/odometer etc display.
Very easy to read at a glance and everything in the one place.
I'm not sure how you would connect it to the Ultima loom and you would also need to re-calibrate the tacho to suite your engines rev range.

I have a few ideas and it's something I am looking into for my car

This does look interesting. Has anyone looked into this? I wonder how much retrofit this would take...

Anyone thought about dakota digital guages? They're a little pricey, but look good at least in the retro cars...

That is a very nice solution but I suspect the Stack 8600 wheel is not exactly inexpensive. Any clues on how much something like that costs?

Thanks

How about a Motec ADL. Also acts as a data logger. Programmable to suit what you want displayed.

The thing to watch for is that (in the UK) you must have an odometer. Not sure on the full requirements but believe it must only be factory reset.
Seem to remember the Motec does not have this.
