Isn't he an ardent Brown supporter? I thought the instead of a knighthood, the Queen would've given him a slap "Come to your senses Patick!"

Not sure; is not most entertainment/Hollywood types for Dems/Labour?

Making him a Knight makes a good case for abolishing the honours system altogether.

I agree that all of these knighthoods for what would have been jesters long ago is a bit diluting.

He certainly is, he professed his love for Brown and labour when he was on the Andew Marr - my socialist friends show.

He's a great actor who's been a good ambassador for the UK for a long time; however mistaken they are I don't think his political beliefs should come into it.

Now giving Mr. Mediocre an MBE for scraping the F1 title after years of creaming a huge salary for being merely 'OK', that's a travesty. smile

Indeed. I saw him on stage for the first time in "Waiting for Godot" earlier in the year, and I was amazed. Given that the other lead was played by Ian McKellen, I'd expected Stewart to be acted off the stage - but he really shone. I couldn't give a monkeys about his politics: he really is a terrific actor.

having read the list now it would apear that the major recpiants are getting rewarded for doing their jobs. The most awards go to civil servants with odd ones going to celebrities. In these days of saving money how can this corrupt and discredited system continue, the cost and the amount of people involved in this must cost millions, the awards ceromony alone must be a million in costs.
When we have status quo and Patrick Stewart awarded and yet how few of our servicemen recognised it is an affront to the rest of the people.

Absolutely. A soldier does 20 years in the service with maybe 5 years in and out of deserts being shot at and living a tough life and he gets a discharge paper....the actor, instead of the modern knight, gets knighthood. The times we live in.

New Year's honours are given by the Government, the Queen only carries out the ceremony. So all the big Labour supporters are getting awards now as they won't get any under a new government. Along with other people who have been in the news so that the current gubberment can be seen as being a bit hip and current and not totally biased towards their socialist friends.
