Was thinking about signing up to the Ancestry.co.uk free trail. Has anybody used this site, and is it any good? Thought some family history might be a good pressie for the old mans birthday.

Not used them but also saw the advert yesterday and was pondering a scout of the site. Thanks for the reminder. Must remember to find out which forebear to blame for my short temper and bald head.

Have used this, but it is very limited as they did not seem to have too much info, mostly Censusses (Censes?) and a lot of counties missing.

BEWARE of their automatic rebilling option (not really an option as its deliv´berately hidden) after a year, their prices are over the top anyway but to automatically rebill you again after 1 year is almost criminal in my eyes, as any information they have can be found in a few days search.
The rebilling is hidden away on their payments pages and will only be visible when you've signed up (billing is done by another company) so IMMEDIATELY e-mail them both and refuse the automatic rebilling and get them to confirm this in writing!

free trail.
I hear the free trial is better hehe

on a serious note family history can take a long time to get the right people specially when you get back past family that are still living & their immediate relatives. ancestry can take alot of sifting through of the scans of the original census' due to incorrect transcription
my mum initially had the free trial for ancestry but had to go on to take out a years subscription & that was just to get the right info on the section of the family she was concentrating on at the time.

if you only have a small section of the family/few people you want to find out about then you should be fine but I would suggest you start off with talking to your older relatives who are still alive & documenting their memories of the family & work from that.

I have been with Ancestry for several years now. Results depend on the level of "membership" you choose. I have not been disappointed.

If you can find a person (in your family) who is doing the same research, only one of you need go and get the high level of membership, you can then share the results and the difference in cost.
