i have a 2001 330ci m sport,

service history shows

oil service at 10 000 miles

an inspection 1 at 20 000 miles

oil service at 30 000 miles

car is now at 40 000 miles and i have just changed the oil again but not at BMW ( also not messed with the service indicator )

the reading on the dash says: 'Inspection in 6000 miles'

is this an inspection 1 or 2? i thought 2 was at 60 000 miles???

Due to it's low mileage looks like it has been serviced at date intervals rather than distance intervals. Hence it now asking for Insp II at 40k.

It will be an inspection 2. Given the low mileage, I guess the car was serviced based on time between services rather than mileage?

That's a bit odd then, the service schedule is meant to be 15k miles (ish) or 2 years, which ever is first. Although the service indicator is shown in miles, it's actually worked out by the amount of fuel used, so if it's driven hard then the services will be closer together.

There's nothing to stop someone from having the services done early. The previous keeper probably chose to have them done at 10k intervals which isn't a bad thing.

My E39 has the major service every 15,000 miles (£250) and oil changes in between and it has doen since new, I don't really pay any attention to those green lights, I get it serviced every October before the MOT regardless.

No there is nothing to stop them having it done early, however, unless I've read it wrong it has been serviced at 10,000 miles and 3 year intervals. The service schedule is for 2 years max.

Good point, missed the overshoot on the maximum time.
