Hi everyone,

I have a second bottle mounted under my expansion tank. It is identical to the washer bottle and has a pipe from the overflow (just under the cap) of the expansioin tank and goes into the top. Any ideas what its for?

Cheers

I believe its the expansion overflow tank

When it works it's great and overflows into the tank and should suck it back on cooling !

Good luck with that. I run my overflow tube down side of car yikes

My overflow pipe runs forward and stops behind the nose cone, where, on hot days after a hoon, it can drip.
A pain, because I'm obliged to investigate the leak incase it's something seriuous. Sounds like the op has a neater solution.

Hi Shaun

That extra tank was fitted on all later "Wedges" stop's the over flow from running on the floor and giving you a scare as you first think your rads leaking!

Have a good new year and hope to meet you next year!

Andy.

How wierd? Just like giving new owners a set of "don't worry beads". In my parallel universe, it was an elegant Work-Around I fitted to my Single Plenum in '96 that habitually expelled coolant due to a slight head gasket problem inducing pockets of unwanted air into the crooks/nannies of the cooling system. That head gasket leak never worstened over 10 years, so the bottle remained fitted throughout.

A relatively small amount of expelled fluid would be caught in the 500 ml plastic shampoo bottle strapped on the chassis rail. As pointed out already, the elegance being, when the engine cooled, prior expelled fluid was sucked back into the cooling system.

Even quirkier! Over time, an afflicted engine, even tho' fitted with the bottle would lose fluid, long term, so, from time to time, filling the overflow bottle to the brim when parked up after a run out enabled the system to AUTOMATICALLY refill itself.

Yet another problem could be partially alleviated by the overflow bottle trick! When systems seem to defy expelling airlocks or where owners have not learned the knack, expanding air in the system pushes out needed fluid demanding continual up-topping. The bottom line is to learn the knack. Both that process plus the bottle trick are detailed HERE

I installed one too a while back on the 350i (head gasket too - until I replaced them).

If it doesn't suck back in, get one of my nice new shinney V8 rad caps, they are dual-seal and will suck back in after cooling down. From then on, you don't have to disturb the caps to check them, just ame sure there's an inch or two of coolant in the overflow and it'll self-top-up.

Can we do away with top and bottom tanks and just use a larger capacity single tank?
