Hi All,

The Mrs and I are keen on doing an Overlanding trip. Not all by our lonesome (to sart with), but a properly run sort of affair.

Any recommendations?

Also, to what extent do I mod the Defender (300Tdi)?

Ray Nix at Rockingham Landrover is always overlanding would be a good place to start.

Dont over prepere most poeple excesivly pimp there motors. You dont need lift kits and winches etc etc etc. A standard motor woulkd do the job just fine. Get a small supply of spares and make sure you know how to fit them. It's no use having the part if you cant fit it. Make sure everything is properly strapped down and keep the center of gravity low. 2 spares and a row of jerry cans on the roof may look cool but they'll ruin the handling and affect fuel consumption toTheres big money in overland preperation but speak to someone who has acctually done it. See what they take not twhat the experts think you should take. Go to the landrover addict forums and speak to Mike Gemini he's been touring africa every summer for the past few years just him and his wife he'll give you lots of help and advice.

I thought that over prep may be a common theme. I'll give them a shout and see what's what in the next week or so.

Happy New Year, too. We've just had another few inches of snow, so it'll be more playtime in the Def tomorrow!

if youre going to be going with the car loaded up to its weight limit with kit. think about fitting dual standard shocks. ( much cheaper than v.expensive uprated remote reservoir etc etc.

and you're more likely to be able to find a replacement standard shock should the worst happen

yesAlthough with +2" HD springs and pro-comp shocks we were the only people we met en route who didn't have suspension troubles. Depending on what you want to do there's no real need for any mods except possibly some underbody protection.

The main thing IMO is to replace bits that might break (the fuel tank is notorious for rotting out for instance and you want to make sure the cooling system is in fine fettle) and to travel light.

I've still got an unused hand winch in the garage...
