Driving Reading to Brighton shortly

Whats going to be the least painfull route?
AA route planner is saying M4/M25/M23 but I've got visions of that being a rush hour nightmare (is every back to work of what? Loads of traffic outside my flat now - normal rush hout style).
Or do I go A33/A339/A272 and swing in that way in an attempt to find some clear air keepin away from London? Or will that be a complete waste of time and full of traffic too?
I leave shortly after 5pm.

I did the A33/A339 etc... route back from Brighton recently and it was pissing down with rain and dark - pretty unpleasant as I didn't know the roads well so didn't know when there was a safe place to overtake the traffic.AA route planner is saying M4/M25/M23 but I've got visions of that being a rush hour nightmare (is every back to work of what? This is usually quite up to date for traffic:

Just come back from Goodwood so kinda reverse direction but opted to keep off the motorways etc just to be safe - Midhurst, Hindhead, Farnham all got traffic but nothing bad and kept moving along nicely. Course you have to go a bit further East than I was and motorways would be fastest route if they are flowing - having avoided them however I can't answer that......ergo, I can't really help at all
