So how come that looks so blue?

I thought the phrase 'Once in a blue moon' was coined after Krakatoa erupted and put so much dust and ash in the atmosphere that it looked blue....

Different moons throughout the year are given names. A blue moon is nothing to do with the colour but is a second full moon which occurs in a month (every 3 and a bit years).

yes That's it. It pretty much means something that doesn't happen very often. Bit like me buying a round of drinks wink

Here's the (partial, and somewhat cloudy) eclipse -

A full moon occurs every 28 days but a calender month has 28-31 days in it.

Therefore every so often there is a full moon twice in a calender month.

Tonight is a full moon.

The second one is known as a Blue Moon - hence the phrase 'once in a blue moon'.

There won't be another 'till 2028 so if it's still there get out and take a peep.
