I've driven down to Garda a couple of times for sailing events. There are 2 main schools of thought of how to get there;

1. No tolls- but takes longer. Go through Germany etc- longer but very little toll cost (approx £10)- cant go out of inside lane when towing in Germany. Cheap fuel in Luxemburg as well.

2. Go through France- and Swiss. Quicker but expensive. Have to buy Swiss Vignette (spelling?)/ yearly road tax (about 30E- I did it this year but can't remember). Total tolls about 120E return trip. Mileage from Calais approx 750-800

I do route 2 in about 14 hours (towing) but with virtually no stopping apart from fuel. Route 1 I imagine is about 2/3 hours longer. So while route 2 costs over £100 more there is 4-6 hours less travelling (return trip).

All of this is off the top of my head so don't quote me on figures/ numbers, but this is the general guide.

Not about driving down but roads around the area...mad!
The motorway is a toll road. We drove from Verona to Peschiera Del Garda. The roads were mobbed and hard to get anywhere quick.
But it is a very beautiful place. Lots to do in the area.
Malcesine is up on the north of the lake, with a lift to the top of a mountain with spectacular views over garda.
Modena isn't to far, home of ferrari. Verona is a beautiful place.
And karting near Brescia and well worth it.
