Hello all

I've had some requests for pictures of bellhousing and clutch parts so I thought I'd post them in a new thread. I have both types of bellhousing off the car so if anyone needs any more pics ploease let me know. It will probably be a few weeks before it's all back together as I'm waiting for seals and bearings to arrive!

Old bell housing

New bellhousing

New style clutch

I believe the old style clutch has a chamfered edge and is not as deep hence the need for the later bellhousing or a machined old style. There are 2/3 different size slave cylinders aswell.

See here the scoring on my slave cylinder which was NOT leaking and was working fine. I've only pulled it to change the clutch release bearing.

I also had a strange vibration/squealing noise at exactly 3500rpm and then again at 4000 rpm. It was definately coming from the bellhousing area. AS you can see below there are witness marks on the inside of the bellhousing. I'm thinking they could be related.

Will it be allright to dress the bellhousing (with a grinder) to make sure it doesn't happen again?

I need to helicoil most of the bellhousing mounting holes so it may be that the bellhousing was slightly out of alignment.

Lastly here is a picture of the crank spigot bearing. Has anyone had any experience of these wearing out? I had not intended to remove the clutch so it will be staying in unless it's a common problem.

Anymore pics just let me know.

Cheers

Hi

Well those pics should answer a lot of questions, thanks for that!
Now I have to buy the correct bits and persuade my mate to help re-do the clutch again.

Superb Ed, all we need now is a pic of an older style clutch and the 3 comparitve slave cylinders and make this into a sticky for future reference?

You mean the three other clutches, the four other bellhousings and don't forget the flywheels as well. Seen four different types of those so far...

The real challenge is that the insides are also machined differently as well. The real issue is that they are not really interchangeable. You need the right flywheel with the right clutch with the right bell housing with the right slave cylinder. The flywheels have different recessing and face heights and these need to be matched up to the clutch pack otherwise it will either not work or it means that the clutch life is reduced.

This is one of the reasons why I can't do a LS kit as I have to machine the transmission adapters etc to fit the individual setup that has been used.

I have also seen the teeth catching on the bellhousing and I have found some bellhousings to be eliptical. TVR seems to have relied on the flywheel itself to machine the bellhousings. I now check and machine them if necessary. Some are marked TVR, some MCD, some TVR/MCD and others TVR Speed Six!

Also there are different clutch mounting bolts as well. Some need a lower profile than the normal cap screws.

I think it was my clutch mounting bolts that were causing the witness marks on the bellhousing.

I did post a thread last time I had the gearbox out with the different slave cylinders etc. I will have a dig around and see what I can find.

Does anyone have any thoughts on the crank spigot bearing?

I can't answer specifically for the Cerb, but I've never had problems with spigot bearings in any other engine I've rebuilt. They don't take very much load, so if it feels OK when you turn it over by hand you'll probably be OK to just wash it out and re-lubricate it.

There's always the argument to change it anyway "just in case" but you have to know where to stop!

Those marks on the bell housing look exactly like mine did after a TVR dealer changed my clutch.
It's the bolts in the clutch pack, if they protrude ie not recessed then that's what happens.
Considering you could feel the grinding and shuddering at tickover you'd have thought they might have
noticed something was wrong. This was with the later style bell housing and a brand new clutch.
This wasn't Austec, they fixed everything up after the mass f"&k up.
