2 weeks ago I took delivery of a 71k mile 2004 318Ci M-Sport. After a few days of driving it a whine was evident which has turned out to be failed bearings. The dealer is being very good and will get it sorted although had never heard of it at this mileage. Has anyone known of this on a BMW at similar mileage? Also interested as to what could cause this to happen.

As always, thanks in advance.

Well, it is rare, or at least it was rare, maybe the newer BM's aren't as tough, but historically diffs and gearboxes would go on for ever.

You could have the 1/10,000 that does go wrong, and it's just random.
Apart from losing oil and grinding themselves away, (which moves the problem onto why the seals went so early), the only mechanical means i have heard of problems like this are shaky components, such as an unbalanced prop, flat spotted wheel etc which puts a constant vibration into the diff.
Rear end shakes can be hidden a lot more than front end so might not even be noticeable.
