If it helps I have both and only really use my PS3 as a Blu-ray player, I rarely play games on it now.

But before it does, PS3 has blueray player and free online play. However, I haven't bought either yet, but am hoping to buy an xbox at the beginning of february on the basis that that is what my brothers and friends have and I will be wanting to join them online.....

I have both and prefer the PS3, it's more flexible outside of gaming.
Gamewise, not much in it. Go for the one that has the exclusives that suit you. So Gears of War/Halo/Forza on xbox and Ratchet and Clank, Uncharted, Gran Turismo on PS3.
Xbox is slightly cheaper but doesn't have free online play (£30ish) or built in wifi or a blu-ray player.

Each do the same thing, but have different features. It all depends on what you want out of the Console. Also, i would suggest looking up the exclusive games that each console has, incase any of them could be the deciding factor.
As for me, i had a PS3 Launch version (60GB) first, and i loved it at first. The graphics were nice (Although, PS3's do suffer with a lack of Anti-Aliasing on pretty much all there games unfortunately.). I really enjoyed playing the PS3 right up until i bought an Xbox 360 Elite.
When comparing the both together at the time, the Xbox is a much better console for me. Whether it would be the best for you, i can't say.
Without sounding like a Fanboy, the reason i prefer the 360 is because Xbox Live is a much better experience, the dashboard and Marketplaces are a much nicer experience after the NXE update. Movies can be streamed in HD (1080P) instantly, without the need to download. Things like Facebook, Twitter, Last.FM and Sky Player provide different entertainment if you fancy a break from Gaming. In terms of Graphics, both consoles can push out VERY impressive Graphics when there specifically made for that console. However, it is a well known fact that on alot of Multi-Platform games, the PS3 can only manage to run in 30FPS with no Anti-Aliasing, where as the 360 can do multiple Anti-Aliasing, and run at a smooth 60FPS. The slower FPS and lack of Anti-Aliasing may not bother you on the PS3 or you may not notice it, but i did, and it annoys me.
PS3 does have a Blu-Ray player however. This means disc's for Games can hold alot more information compared to DVDs. The picture and sound quality when playing a BluRay movie is also superior to anything else out there.
In terms of reliability, the PS3 again takes the biscuit. The 360 is no where near as reliable as the PS3. Don't get me wrong, people have had there issues with the PS3 in the past, but it's a very small number of people. The 360 is getting more and more reliable with every version they make. It's not like it's the end of the world if (Or shall i say when? lol) the 360 does decide to go bang though. I have had two break down on me now, and while it's a little nuisance, Microsofts customer support is fantastic, and my new console has always arrived back in 3-5 days, which is very impressive.
So to sum up, if you want the console for playing Movies and Games in super HD, get a PS3.
If your looking to spend more time Gaming online and browsing the online stores, get a 360.
