I have been to the GFOS previously just for the day and loved every second of it. This year, we are thinking of doing the wekend and camping at the venue.

Has anyone done this and if so what are the good and bad points. Also what tips do you have ?

Do a lot of people camp there or is it a bit quiet and low-key etc etc

Went with a group of friends (5 of us) and had a great time. We booked two plots next to each other had 5 tents and a large marque in the middle which was the food and get drunk area! We went for the 3 days, drove down thursday evening so we could get the ball rolling.

My advice would be take a gas cooker a cool box with sausages and bacon etc and loads of beers! smile The only thing we are doing different this year is only buy tickets for friday and saturday as we were all knackered on sunday and didn't bother going in.

It was quite hard to keep the beer cold due to excellent weather last year, so I got a plastic box filled it with water then put the cans/bottles in then got a wet towel and placed it on top, and we had cold beer from then on! smile Mr C

Is it a kind of Le Mans vibe, or more refined?

Not been to Le Mans (yet) but the guys i went with go every year and they said that the vibe was better than Le Mans but that's only because they say that Le Mans camping has gone down hill due to curtain people.

We had some lovely neighbours last year and some people had music on but at low volume. If i remember there was one camper van with heavy metal pumping out but they soon turned it down. smile

We go to Le Mans every year so the camping/eating/drinking thing is covered. Is there a good atmosohere ? and how far from the main area/house is it ?

There is only one main official campsite and it's about 5 mins walk to the closest entrance. To walk from the entrance to the house takes no more than 10 mins, you'll walk past all the retail area and the start line for the sprint is right by the entrance.

The atmosohere was fine! Mr C

Official campsite is crazy expensive.

Any suggestions for a field nearby within walking distance of a pub?

Try the Ship & Anchor Marina Camping Site Arundel.

Try the Anglesey arms Halnacker , he allows camping in the field which is a 1 mile walk down past the farm shop entrance to the Goodwood htl and start line entrance
The beer and food are good ( if not a little £££ , it is only a pub after all ) the guv'nor is a little 'strange' no mobiles in the bar etc , however the beer garden is nice if the weather is fine ( his pub his rules I guess ) .
