Hi folks, just after anyones experiences/opinions on the Stilo 1.6 or 1.8 models. Looking for a car for my lad who has just got his licence back (after being a naughty boy mad ). We're having the usual father son issues of him wanting a faster car than i want to give him money towards buying and insuring. He has found a very nice Stilo 1.8 with a dodgy looking 'panoramic sunroof' but an 04 plate car for 2.5k looks reasonable. I have agreed to help him but only for a 1.6. The 1.8 is group 7 ins and not as fast (on paper) as other 1.8 cars, Astra's/Golfs etc, although claims 133bhp ?? The 1.6 has a respectable 100bhp imo and more than fast enough.
Any info much appreciated, Dave.

Hi,

I used to have a 1.9jtd Stilo. With the sunroof and everything, the sunroof was fine just check it by opening and closing it a few times. Make sure they all slide and fold correctly and make sure there is no leaks or breaks in the seal. Ask if you can pour water over the top, if it doesnt leak they wont mind. Being 18 when i brought it the insurance was respectable, fast enough and not as thirsty as the petrol engines.

I would personally get him the diesel and break him back into driving. The performance and power is there but insurance tax etc is better than a petrol. Just my opinions.
Good luck

I had a 1.9JTD with the sunroof as well.
Never had a problem with the roof in 3 years/60k miles although it does make the car feel slightly strange if you're going for a maximum speed run (indicated 125mph, on the autobahn of course, officer) with it fully open.

The JTD is group 5 insurance as well.
