Next July it will be my 40th so plan to do something decent to celebrate with the wife. Strangely i seem to have been tasked with paying for & organising this event!

Criteria - long weekend as 4-5 days is max babysitting we can call on. Budget not primary concern. Reasonably well travelled.

Anyway, i always said Las Vegas for the 40th but the more i talk to my wife, the more i get the idea that she's not that into it & i will be better off deferring that trip until i can go with people who are.

Racking my brain for something that's significant/different/exciting......

Thought of Tokyo as something that might fit the bill.

Any thoughts, advice or suggestions much appreciated.

Building a trip round a sporting event (whilst great for me) is the sort of thing that won't wash with her. I know, not putting my foot down seems soft given it's my birthday but i'd rather do something she'd enjoy & nip off another time with mates for the sport!

Sounds a lot like the trip is for her benefit not yours, get her to plan it if shes going to poo-poo all your ideas.

Tokyo is a 13-14 hour flight. Not much fun fighting with jet lag if you are only there for 3 days.

Istanbul ?

Marrakesh ?

Dubai ? Mind you will be sweltering in July !

Canada maybe ? everyone i know that's been says it's fantastic.

Chernobyl was a serious suggestion btw. My mate has been and his company now run tours there, it's something I want to do, and not something many will do.

I would agree that you don't want to do Tokyo as my husband goes there on business quite a lot and unless you are going to pay to fly either business or first class the 14 hour flight will be a killer.

What about a trip to see a your favorite concert or band play

Hire a car you have always wanted to drive and go off for a few days, this would give you the option of booking into a hotel with a spa where you could leave the wife while you go off for a great day driving

Thanks for the help (seriously) , some food for thought. I had the Tokyo idea, but having been to China/Malaysia & Korea was wary about the jet lag...

I think i didn't help myself with the chat about mrs W!! It's less of this argue than this confused .

Stick with Vegas, I'd be amazed once she has been if she didn't like either the Glitz of the strip or the natural beauty surrounding it.

or how about Monaco (F1 weekend or not)

Couldn't upload restaurant photo for some reason. Shower room in the suite will have to do!

stick to vegas.
stay at the wynn and she'll love it.if she doesn't get rid.

many people have preconceived ideas of vegas.yes it can be tacky and false but it can be so much more if you want it to be.

there is nowhere i'd rather go - and the gambling does not interest me.

just search for some of the advice threads on here for what you can do in vegas.

p.s.happy birthday.
