Every summer we go to Orlando for a couple of weeks, booked for 3 weeks in July / Aug 2010 only to find ou usual car hire company Yes Car Hire have folded.

We are looking for a people carrier for 3 weeks and best prices are around £600 hire and insurance at the moment, one driver only etc so looking to see who you use for your hire ?

Also does anyone hire their vehicles and insure independently ?

We just got back from Florida and used Orbitz to get our car. We recieved a Toyota Camry with unlimited mileage and the cost was under $350.00 U.S. for 8 days and $80.00 per day if we went over the 8 days. Booking in advance should get you the best prices so check the rental company websites and try Orbitz/Travelocity/Priceline etc. to see if they offer car rentals separately. We found that the Keys were a big disappointment as hotels ran from $249.00 to $750.00 per night so we stayed in Florida City for $80.00 per night and just spent the day in the Keys. If you have any questions e-mail us to see if we can answer at aleppard@hotmail.com We spent 8 days there and left the day before New Years so that was the problem with costs for lodging as it was getting busy there.

I've not found anywhere cheaper and I've been renting in the States for years.

Don't forget their prices are all-in, many places are rental only and don't factor in Insurance adn taxes.

I've been many times and for the last few years have used http://www.usrentacar.co.uk - for some reason they generally have 7 seater SUV's for the same or less than 5 seater SUV's which makes them a fair bit cheaper on that vehicle than other consolidators.

Generally speaking though, they should all be similar prices - if you're seeing £600ish you're not going to suddenly find one at £400.

I've considered the separate insurance, or the possibility of using the Amex Platinum card cover, but even from the base rates in the US, you end up at similar price as the all-inclusive UK prices. I've also read stories of rental companies not accepting the insurance (although Amex have a number the agent can call to check) and if you have a claim then you could have to pay the full value of the car and then claim it back from the insurance company.

What I'd really like to do is book the cheapest possible sub-compact and then slip the agent $50 to upgrade us - allegedly you can do that but I'm just not the sort of person who would get away with that!

Insanely, the best price I could find was from easycar in the UK. They booked through alamo at the airport, and were much cheaper than any of the big names direct.
