Anyone got any thoughts on whether it's worth the extra over a Madone 5.x frame? I'm getting the sense from people I've spoken to so far that it is...
... always good to get a 2nd opinion away from the pure road racer fanatics though

From the looks of it, your build is pretty solid.
Seen a top spec project one madone in my LBS and it was pretty nifty (integrated computer - cool, but pointless. Di2 - WANT) - although it was top spec, so the project one nonsense made sense - this was dream bike territory. Would you get more for your money with the boggo Ultegra madone? Granted, it wouldn't be custom, but would you rather a custom bike or a off the peg one with a powertap/race wheels/whatever?
How much all in would it be to get it to the UK if you don't mind me asking?

please dont take offence at these comments but it may be just me yet I would want to spec the best products on the market rather than simply the best that trek/bonty have to offer especially for $6K!
in my humble opinion, although they are selling great bikes here, they are targetting people who just want to save time and money rather than researching the market and getting a truly personalised bike. the custom paint job thing appears to suck people in though and begs the question "what price individuality?. as i said they are great bikes, the kit is all pro-circuit tried and tested but there are major sticking points for me.
using the project one website you are very limited on wheels and there are some awesome wheelsets out there when you are speccing a $6K bike. for that sort of money i would be making some compromises on the rest of the build and looking at zipp 404s with chris kings...ok bang, there goes half my budget but then you can save a bit of cash here and there on other less vital components. hey its just me but i would want the best products out there, an FSA chainset, a fizik saddle etc etc... i guess the difficulty comes from obtaining the frame you want but there are plenty of options out there (Cervelo, Colnago, Ridley) in fact you used to be able to get the madone 6.9 as a frame (possibly with forks?)
i like ultegra a lot, never had a problem on my bike, its light enough but most importantly its been 100% reliable, as i said though, i dont see the problem running a bit of 105 where its not a vital piece of the drivetrain.

I can't help but disagree with this - for that price, you won't be getting the best components on the market - any build you come up with (especially decked out with 404s) as you say will be skimping on quality somewhere - considering you will need to buy a frame, groupset, training wheels and everything else for £1500 - cervelo's cheapest (alloy) frame is £800-900 and the groupset on the above build is £600 The P1 bulid in the OP is strong on all fronts - granted, the wheels aren't 404's but it is a pretty nice build.
If it was my money and I was in the OP's position, I don't know - depends on the price difference when all is considered - if it was enough for a powertap, it would definatley be the off the peg Madone with the fancy rear hub. If it was enough for a set of tyres, I would be getting the full on custom vulgar argyle paint job from the project one boys.

I had though along the lines for something more custom and looking across the manufacturers. My thinking by speccing the way I have is to go for decent but not mega wheels do "do for now" and similar with drive train.
My thinking is it makes the bike a damn good ride for the first season and a spec that should be a huge improvement over current. From there I can then determine what I need and aim to add - i.e, Zipp aero wheels,etc. if I want them so I have 2 set of wheels for race/train.
