PS3 Friends list missing information

Hello all. I bought a PS3 250gb slim over Christmas and have been merrily playing it over the festive period. I have noticed one problem though which relates to the friends list.
After downloading the MAG beta last night my friends appear on the list as grey smiley boxes. All of the information about them (avatar and last login time) has disappeared. The only information showing is there name.
I signed out of PSN and signed back in and this seemed to fix the problem. But when I turned by PS3 off and went back on a few hours later the friends list was missing the info again.
I have done some searches around the internet and have seen solutions such as database rebuilds (surely not needed as only had the console a week), changing your profile comment and also signing out and back in.
So, is this a known PS3 problem and does anyone else suffer from it? Is there a solution? Oh, by the way, my firmware is up to date.
