Now, im by no means a genius, but surely the folks employed by the council should at least have a tiny bit of common sense?

Alas, it seem not.

Having driven through Wolverton yesterday afternoon, it was nice to see the gritter lorry doing its stuff- spreading its (what im led to believe) precious cargo on the roads, spraying pedestrians and the like as it went.

Very re-assuring, given the cold weather, the potential for ice and so on.

Given that the councils are reported to be running out of the stuff, its nice to see it used wisely.

But hang on a moment. Whats that vehicle 500 yards behind it?

Oh yes, its the council roadsweeper.

It cant get to the kerb due to the number of cars parked on the main road, so it is brushing the main highway.

Its doing a lovely job- not a piecd of litter to be seen anywhere.

That said, there isnt a bit of grit left to see either.

Well done everyone- planning at its very, very best.

I saw that a couple of years ago in St Neots - phoned the Council who practically wept with despair! Apparently, the sweepers are contracted to do X roads so many times a month....a little bit of common sense should also be written in to the contracts!

On Monday, I heard about a very steep hill that hadn't been gritted, person phoned the Council to request it be done and their response was it wouldn't in case the Gritter got stuck at the bottom.... er, might make them do a good job on the way down then!

It's because they don't have to make a profit.

They don't grit my road because "It's too slippy for the gritters"

The roadsweeper was sent there by a neighbouring council (who have run out of salt).

This is what happens when people moan about public sector costs so they contract as much out as possible.

Same reason councils can't use bin-men to clear footpaths of snow any more.

Will the water not have anti-freeze in it?

Since all they are doing is putting down salt to make a brine solution, why don't towns on the coast just spray seawater on the roads?

I would hope so, but I wouldnt credit the council with the intelligence to do that. Judging by the cars squirming their way along, Id say it was pure H2O they were spraying!!
