I think I should probably grit the driveway before it snows but we are out & nowhere locally has any left.

Do you know of anything that works as an alternative?

A few bags of dishwasher salt from the nearest Asda/any other ultra cheap supermarket is probably your best bet.

Rocksalt from builders merchant or dishwasher salt (the stuff it rinses with)

not so much getting rid of ice, as being grippier on compacted snow and ice
